  • Dude you went to China and didn't even mention all those times the attempt to sabotage a neighbouring kingdom is literally just "yeah. Send him some women" like damn that happened _surprisingly_ often lol. Or that time a guy wanting political power so giving the Prince's betrothed with another woman in secret and gave the poor princess to the King got the kingdom conquered. Or that time a King's attempt to get one of his wives(concubines? I forgot the details) whom he stole - ew - to smile by lighting signaling pyres that are to indicate that the Xiongnu are invading to summon all his generals and their armies got his entire kingdom conquered by said Xiongnu when they did turn up. Or- I'll stop myself there. There's a lot of hilarious bs in Chinese history when you think of it lol. Edit: iirc interestingly, An Lushan is given to 杨贵妃 as a sort of adoptive son by Li Linfu, who wanted to fill all the powerful positions in the government with non-Han, i.e. 'lesser', people so no one can take his position. iirc, there's were so many hints that An Lushan was getting ready for a rebellion, but Xuanzong just liked him so much, so he basically ignored all of it until they were all driven out. Also interestingly, An Lushan's whole thing was rather successful, but somewhere along the line, he was assassinated by his son because his son wanted to more power. His son was then overthrown by one of An Lushan's generals, Shi Siming, who lead the rebellion for a few years... before getting assassinated by his son for the exact same reason.

  • People (and the records they produced) are hyper focused on rulers sex lives because that is their PRIMARY function. The first thing they’re taught, especially the women, is that they aren’t secure in their throne until they are 1) married, and 2)have a male child (depending on where, but that was the majority opinion) with their spouse. Even ruling their Kingdoms, Empires, Caliphates etc was second to producing a legitimate heir to the throne.

  • 7:10 The first line of the song of everlasting sorrow was mentioning the Han dynasty but it's pointed at the Tang emperor. In Chinese literature mentioning the name of your emperor or dynasty is a little bit of a no no and can get you Sima Qianed if the emperor is having a bad day. So Han, the previously long lasting dynasty became a synonym for the ruling dynasty.

  • Its so weird how famous the "let them eat cake" thing is but like... Its a translation. Marie Antoinette never actually said this because she's french. She would have no reason to say an english thing to her french people. Plus, what she MIGHT have actually said is "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche" which in no way means "let them eat cake". It would be more like "Then they'll eat buns" because brioche is a specific pastry, not cake. Not to mention that the translation makes it seem like she said "allow them to eat cake" when she said something more like "they have no more bread so they can just eat buns instead". Its a bit hard to tranlate honestly but "let them eat cake" is just a lousy ass translation.

At first, he discredited the emperor who put the entire situation to himself, but near the end, Bai Juyi appreciated their love. • China has one bad couple to rule them all: Daji and Zhou/Di Xin. Daji was a sadistic manipulator that would disgust even Dé Sade himself. Xin was a simp who catered to her every, horrifying whim. Oh and don’t worry, that inflicting of pain was DEFINITELY a bedroom thing for her. Xin was no better in response to her, unsurprising, infidelity; killing her suitor then feeding the ground up remains to the father, Ji Chang. After imprisoning Ji, the youngest Chang son would lead a rebellion with the people, and with the help of the military of the Shang dynasty itself (they turned at the first chance they could, go figure, almost makes you think Machiavelli was wrong). The whole affair ends with Zhou pulling a cowards way out, by fire (self-immolation), and Daji getting the chopping block. ... and scene.

  • The reason that the poem is set in the Han dynasty:1. It's still in Tang dynasty,so talking about the emperor's grandfather is not quite emmm?(I have no accurate words to describe this but I think you know)2. It's a different version of the history,a more romantic story without the part of his sons wife and other things 3. The author Baijuyi was an excellent poet,so we just focus on his touching and beautiful words(in Chinese),now think about the story itself,it's really weird (≖_≖ )
