Fables and Folktales: The Snow Queen

Welcome to 2021! It's cold, it's been a hell of a journey, and sometimes it feels like we're being pelted by shattered glass. What story could've possibly fit the bill so perfectly?
Disney really missed an opportunity when they decided Frozen was going to have exactly nothing in common with the original story. Honestly that kind of analysis could be worth a video all on its own…
It's myth-y enough I'm still gonna put it in the same playlist, but it would've felt disingenuous calling it a myth, soooooo

  • Wow! I can definitely relate to that kid who can't see goodness, and who ends up nearly freezing to death while trying to piece together "Eternity." That metaphor doesn't get enough press in this comment section. I wish I had had a Gerda then. I think that^ is probably a good lesson to teach kids.

  • Perhaps this is a difference in translations, but in the Russian-language version of this tale, Gerda's main strength was not purity, but a strong character and perseverance. Damn, she said to the face of the little robber, who at that moment was holding a knife at her throat, that even if she had to go to the North without warm clothes or food, barefoot and all alone, she would still do it, because she had to protect Kai. We even have a film based on this fairy tale called "The Snow Queen's Mystery", where the general idea with a distorted outlook on things is tied to the crisis of adolescence, and Gerda's whole journey is seasoned with a good number of metaphors on the topic of growing up, responsibility and priorities. For example, Gerda is gifted with a magic match, which can fulfill one wish, but for this, it must burn out in the girl's hand to the very end and burn her fingers. Because for miracles you need not just pay, but pay consciously, realizing that most likely you will feel pain.

  • The Snow Queen was CGI. Like the wolves in Game of Thrones. They spent all the CGI money on Dragons, so by the end of the show, they just had the wolves stand there looking pretty for 3 seconds. So, yeah, the Snow Queen is off screen.

Also for a story called The Snow Queen we never actually really see the Snow Queen which is BS

  • You know, that hypothetical "retrieving broken shards" plot Red mantioned during the credits reminded me a bit of this old anime called Princess Tutu. The entire first season does revolve around the main character retrieving magical shards of a supernatural thing that has been broken and scattered all over the world and those shards have been messing with people's emotions. It is a little different than the fairytale, since the thing in question is not an evil mirror but a heart of a prince. And something about Mytho does remind me of Kay... Given the various fairy tale motifs and references in the anime, including to Andersen, I can't help but wonder if it was intentional.

  • They actually made a movie series about this. (Don't bother, it's bad) Honestly, the girl isn't that off, but there's no mention of the mirror. The boy is her crush and has the heart of something or other that the ice queen apparently hates. So. She kidnapps the boy and almost freezes him to death for being an artist. Meanwhile the girl is going to find him (basically her entire story) except for the robbers and princess parts. But what I hated most was the fact this ICE QUEEN WAS A MISUNDERSTOOD SCARED LITTLE GIRL WHO THE MAIN MC JUST HAD TO SLAP. It was honestly a dumb movie I watched because I was bored. :/ and doesn't really make much sense at all really.
