You asked, I've answered! Today let's discuss greek mythology's most beloved AND most maligned relationship - but which reputation is truly deserved? You all know where *I* stand on the matter, but today I'll do my best to justify my hot take that Hades And Persephone Is Romantic Actually.
Our content is intended for teenage audiences and up.

  • Red, I stumbled into a little Wikipedia hole and I think you should talk about Lycaon of Arcadia and Zeus, because there's multiple versions of the myth and Greek werewolves in some? And I know Wikipedia can be off sometimes, so a different look at it could be cool!

  • For literature our teacher gave us to read Greek stories and myths. Sure giving a book full of murder, revenge and gods rapping women is perfect for 12 years olds 😐 (especially in a class were the girls are the ones that are the most involved in the literature club). And I was really mad at the way Hades is portrayed so bad and evil in other media when he is literally the best god.

  • I'm gonna pull a guess out of my ass. Hades (ne Poseidon) is part of this myth simply because Greek society felt that a male had to nominally be in charge. Persephone may have been the death goddess, but it was inconceivable that a woman would be in charge of the Underworld, so they created a husband for her. There are no tales about him because he doesn't matter, beyond being able to say that he's king.

    • They sure did. Areion was alleged to be the fastest horse alive, to run so fast that he could walk over water in a manner similar to The Flash/the rl basilisk lizard. Iirc in the myth of the Seven Against Thenes, one of the seven attackers utilized Areion as his steed.

  • Maybe Persephone is tied to flowers and such is because flowers are a common gift to the dead, like in funerals and in graves . That would make sense in tying up her cute and nature self to the underworld and the dead image. In some cultures giving someone flowers when they're alive is wishing or cursing them to die, so flowers can go both ways in light and comforting to scary and dreadfull, that seams to match her image in mythology

Hera rejected Zeus' advances so he lured her close by transforming into an injured animal, then r*ped her when she got close enough, after which she was obligated to marry him. And they were brother and sister, too. By Olympian standards, kidnapping your niece is peanuts.

  • Why is Hades always so awesome? When he's a villain, he's awesome, and even when he _isn't_ a villain, he's _still_ awesome! After everything else in Greek mythology, it's kind of amazing that Hades and Persephone just have a perfectly loving relationship as the king and queen of hell with their pet dog (who's name is apparently equivalent to... "Spot"... just in case you didn't think he was just a cute doggo), with Persephone even taking regular vacations to see her mom again. Why is this so wholesome?

  • Hm...hear me out on this... Demeter goes and has a kid with Zeus, right? This child is made to marry Poseidon, and is named the Queen of the Underworld. This is the veiled Goddess, who is on the hush-hush list because of her high affiliations with the Underworld. Time passes, and she has a son, who is also kept quiet, in sorts. Demeter has another child, and she is named Persephone, but referred to as Kore, like a loving nickname by the mother. The Veiled Goddess makes Hades the unofficial God of the underworld. Poseidon decides to scoot over and becomes God of the Oceans. The Veiled Goddess decides to also scoot over and tells Hades to find a wife, and he decides to go with Persephone/Kore, and so he goes to Zeus, asks for Persephone's hand, and Zeus does what he does, Hades 'Kidnaps' Persephone, Demeter goes depressed, and Hades is told by his mom, the Veiled Goddess, to feed the Pomegranate seeds to Persephone, which would explain the reason for the fruit connection, consitering the Veiled Goddess would be related to Demeter. Either that, or the Veiled Goddess is Demeter's Sister, and Demeter and her were/are close, and Demeter allowed The Veiled Goddess to make one fruit, and it was the Pomegranate, a fruit whose juices resemble that of blood, and could be used as a contract binder(the seeds), and yeah. Idk tho, just a theory

  • Ok so total crack theory but... Doesn't Demeter and Poseidon make more sense as the rulers of the gods when looking back at their grandparents? Like Gaia and Uranus were each primordial representations of earth and space respectfully, and assuming the Greeks equated space to a large body of water like substance, the eventual rulers of the gods being a ruler of Waters and Plants respectively just gives them another connection to their history. And Gaia and Uranus spawning literally the "titans" and the child of Posiedon and Demeter becoming "dread" also works with that theme of remade gods. Idk if this makes any sense, it just seemed like a cool connection that didn't exist in Hellenistic greek mythology

  • For me, this myth of Persephone is what makes me love Hades. Had it been Zeus or Poseidon, they would've kidnapped Persephone in a much worse way, either by turning into an animal or something. And then after they'd had a child with her (possibly through rape), they would've just moved on and tossed her aside to raise the kid on her own. Hades however genuinely loved her, so much so that he agreed to the compromise that he'd be separated from her for NINE MONTHS at a time because it would mean he'd still get to see her at all. Hades is basically the Jaime Lannister of Greek Mythology.

  • The whole Despoina thing combined with Persephone's much richer and more threatening characterization gives me the amusing mental image of a version where it was Persephone/Despoina's idea to either get some time away from Demeter or a power play to gain control of the underworld, and Zeus and Hades were both just kind of bullied into going along with it. Hades in this version would be a timid, mind-mannered bureaucrat who is both aroused and terrified by the fearsome death goddess that chose him to be her boy-toy, and this myth he probably wasn't the god of the underworld until everything had shaken out.
