Everyone loves a powerhouse, and by "everyone" I mean "me, and I'm tired of other people not appreciating them enough!"

  • That power issue with Superman is actually used to be WORSE. I remember a newspaper story about Superman from when John Byrne took over writing the book in 1986. Byrne confused the reporter who interviewed him about it by explaining that he was making Superman more vulnerable - in other words, Kryptonite wasn't basically the only way to hurt or stop him any more, so Byrne could set up more meaningful conflicts. The article featured a glass of wine, and a headline about a "more sensitive Superman."

  • >Give me somebody to talk about Leverage Leverage and Burn Notice have been two underrated gems for years and I keep surprising people with recommending these shows they've never heard about. Leverage in particular is great because quite a) it is a pretty jovial and light-hearted show in an ocean of washed-out, wannabe-dark series with excessive use of tomato-sauce and b) because the acting and writing (occasional series-typical slipups notwithstanding) is surprisingly great and better than it needs to be. For example, not every emotion or thought is spelled out or narrated, many times the actors convey those things simply by looks. Also, whereas the entire cast are specialists in their respective fields, they supplement their skills with talents from the other team members. Not only that, the progress is slow and steady (as opposed to Parker going from a social cripple to an expert con-artist within two episodes) and actually considers with whom they hang out and thus whose skills they learn (Eliot learning a bit of grifting from Sofie but makes much more progress in regards to IT, given the time spent with Hardison). Numerous little issues keep me from recommending the show without reservations but goodness is it deserving of more attention. Also: Jim Sterling's theme (Do you remember). You're welcome.

  • Hey OSP, I got a question... If there is a character that handles the diplomatic nature of the group while being the tank, would they be the Heart or Power House? I don't think he has the "Punch Here to Impress" t-shirt on, but his purpose is to mitigate and absorb the damage from the allies while also bolstering them. (Basically, he is a Paladin with Bardic Insperation lol).

  • Is that 'the guy who looses his hand in Angel' in Levarage?. Cool I really liked his character in Angel, Leslie that was it, and although that is a combination of the writers and the actor I have actually meant to check out more of his work. Thanks for the recommendation. Ps: Little disappointed with the spoiler for season 1, but it's nothing serious.

  • Very good video, I've seen your stuff before wasn't expecting anything else. I liked the comparison between the Hulk and Thor, it immediately brought to mind the scene in infinity War where Thor shows up in wakanda and Bruce/ impotent hulk is the one to triumphantly shout out. • You could also make it so that the villain hard counters the powerhouse in some way. For example, the villain could have high agility and be a primarily ranged fighter, so the challenge isn’t hitting them hard, it’s getting the power house close enough to them to that they can hit them at all.

  • Berserk is so great, and that's in large part how the main character (Guts) solves *all* problems by going... berserk. There is no physical feat he is not capable of, but that's not the point. He has absolutely no idea how to solve any problem that cannot be fixed by hitting it with his really big sword, to the point where his greatest enemy, and main source of strength, is literally his own ego, as tapping into his reserves too much is liable to result in killing the very person he dedicates his life to protecting. It's the best story ever. Read it or you're missing out.

  • You should try a Trope Talk about Grey Villains or Lawful Villains. Those who do evil, but not in the typical I want to conquer the world because I can or for power. More along the lines, I collapsed an entire government and economy because it was so corrupt that only a new government could fix it. Essentially villains who know they are doing wrong in order to achieve their goals, but won't stoop to a certain level such as killing as doing so is heinous in their eyes.

  • I feel like in reality Avengers(the movies) has like 3 power houses. Thor, hulk, and iron man. The movies constantly sideline all 3 of them, because all 3 of them just erase all tension. Thor because viking god made from dead star, hulk because literally immortal with infinite strength, and iron man because super genius that can solve every single problem because he always has the answer, also because his suit has enough explosive power to be classified as a weapon of mass destruction.

  • This just made me realized that the current DnD party I DM for fits a perfectly traditional five man band. Since the campaign is about 85% RP and 15% combat, the 'tough guy', in this case a muscular human tomboy who grew up as the daughter to a factory chief who was shipped out there to wrangle the orcs that worked the factory lines and ended up fistfighting them for combat practice while growing up among street gangs, doesn't get too much of a time to just brutalize things but when they do, it's actually kinda impressive how hard they hit with their PUNCHES. They're a Fighter, by the way, not a Monk. So yeah, they're the one that doesn't need to hand in weapons.

  • The best way to avoid the wharf effect is by having the strength of the powerhouse be nullified rather than overpowered, this shows that the villains may not be stronger than the powerhouse but that they are still a threat due to the fact that they can remove their strength. This make is so that in the final confrontation of the true scary villain you can have them overpower them and you actually feel like they are one upping the powerhouse in a unique way
