At long last, the concluding chapter of Roman history! Let's tie the bow on Byzantine Constantinople as the empire comes to an end, slightly earlier than we might think, but far later than anybody ever could have expected.

  • You keep using Constantinople in your timeline past the 1000’s but from what I read it was being called Istanbul from the tenth century onwards.

  • I don't understand where this idea that the Byzantines were somehow uniquely persistent as a people is coming from. Is there any culture that suffered defeats and then just gave up? If this culture really was unique with regards to its "we get knocked down, and we get up again" qualities, what caused those, and where did it actually make a difference? Is there something to be said about the Ottomans also holding onto Constantinople/Istanbul despite also being in a semi-permanent decline for centuries? Is there some common cause as to why that would be the case?

  • It extremely wrong to say Byzantine Empire , the historically accurate term is Eastern Roman Empire , the term of Byzantine Empire was invented later in time in order to claim what it ment to be Roman along with the "ownership" titles of Europe . History must be written with scientific accuracy not political agenda.

  • so a few days after this video came out, i went through a breakup. it was my first relationship, lasted over six years, and ended worse than i ever thought it would. (and it was almost christmas, so...) while i was going through the first four stages of grief, i really got attached to this video. to me, the end of my relationship and the end of the byzantines had a lot of interesting parallels, which yes, is maybe pretentious, but blue's line "they *existed*, so that's a plus" really got me. "at no point ... was it too late to care, or too late to try." i did my best, even when i knew everything was already lost, just as the byzantines and constantinople did. for a while i'd even repeat constantine xi's (supposed) last words to myself as a reminder: "the city is fallen, and i am still alive." i'm going on to my own next golden age; if and when the giant cannons blow it up, i'll still be alive then too. and that's why i always get misty-eyed watching this video lol. thank you blue, for the amazing history and the incredibly important reminder.

  • I honestly don't like the term of Byzantine because of the whole Holy Roman Empire trying to legitimize itself by calling them Byzantines but it does help with the distinction between antiquity and medieval Rome

  • I don't understand the people who blames muslims or Turks for the fall of Byzantine Empire. Dude Byzantine Empire has fallen in 1204 and their Christian brotherin did it. After that it was just extra time. Even Mehmed II was utterly disappointed when he entered the city for the first time after the siege. He probably was expecting the city from the stories he have heard but it was a ruin. I imagine Belisarius felt the same way when he took Rome from barbarians. Huge disappointment.

The strongest walls in existence, Greek fire, foreign mercenaries and dumb luck was the reason it survived as long as it did. Rome and Greece died because their values died. Byzantium was no more than their luxuriously decorated mausoleum.

  • The byzantine empire is my favorite historical civilization and the long defeat of the empire is, in my opinion, the single most tragic event, culminating in 1453, in western history. I always get so frustrated reading about how the latins, normans, italians and slavs did seemingly more damage than the turks yet once the romans fell and nothing lay between the hordes of turks and europe they would suffer for it.....

  • The byzantines, for some quite big period of time, had the europe's monopoly of producing and processing silk . They used leaves of mulberries trees for silkworm's feed . Peloponesse was kind specialized in silkworms breeding , because the region was suitable for this tree's growth , so in greek mulberries tree is called mouria
